The period roughly between 300 CE to 33 CE in Tamil literature, spoken in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, is called “Sanga Kalam” (The Sangam Period).
It is also called an association or a gathering of Tamil scholars. It is said that the Sage Agastyar chaired the first Sangam in Madurai.
During the Sangam period, it is believed that around 2,500 poems were attributed to around 500 poets.
